Design and AdSense Ads

During the initial stages of an AdSense project, while designing the ‘look’ of your site in something like Photoshop, you should already be thinking about colour, format and placement.

How are the types of ads you’re thinking of getting going to integrate into your site? How do you want them to look? Are they going to be too prominent or they going to be too subtle?

All these questions should be seriously considered as early as possible… and yes, you should have approximate answers to these questions even in the planning stages.

Plan your website with AdSense in mind

Considering these questions early helps you avoid major design obstacles later on in an AdSense project, where you may find it difficult to place your ads in the optimum position required for the clicks.

Also having some idea of the AdSense format you’re going to use enables you to design the general layout of your website with the format in mind, leaving the required space, or ensuring that your site is flexible enough to accommodate the required changes.

It is important to always consider the impact AdSense ads will have on the general layout of your website. It is essential that when the website is built you are able to incorporate the ads confidently into your design without compromising the integrity of the design of the site.

The best approach towards planning AdSense ads into the design of your site is to build a website that is flexible to change. Don’t build a completely rigid website that doesn’t allow room for any adjustments (it’s not a good way to build sites anyway). Give your site sufficient room to encompass different AdSense ad formats.

The Importance of a well-designed AdSense Website

Appearance matters. The look and feel of a website could be the defining factor behind the all important click on the ads on your website. Of course content is all important, but first you have to convince a prospective visitor that what you have to offer is worth their while.

A poorly designed website could lose you a significant number of visitors. Some people, unfortunately are hung up on looks and appearances. As soon as they see that a particular website looks cheap they bounce straight out again before even glancing at the information presented on the site. But then again, some websites due to the nature of the topic that they are covering may need to look better than others anyway.

A well designed AdSense website instils a degree of trust in the publisher. In invokes an air of professionalism. The quality of the content seals the deal, but a pleasant looking site grabs a visitors attention and generates a more receptive atmosphere.

A website doesn’t have to be absolutely brilliant in terms of how well it is designed and put together, but it has be solid, multi-browser compliant and it must look decent.

This is especially important for AdSense niche websites. These websites often confer focused information and they can’t afford to look too sloppy. It’s difficult to trust and absorb information from a site that looks like it’s been put together by a beginner webmaster that as barely got to grips with resizing images much less basic CSS.

So to summarize, a well designed website is important if you want to achieve reasonable AdSense success.

What are the right kinds of AdSense Keywords?

The best kinds of AdSense keywords are those that are used frequently by people that use search engines. Popular search terms are good keywords, simple. But some keywords are extremely popular and even though your website may turn up for a particular query, it is very likely that it might only appear after the tenth page of the results (if you are lucky). These kinds of keywords have too much competition and are probably not the best kinds to focus on.

What you need to do to circumvent the competition is to discover a good niche topic, rich with popular yet undiscovered AdSense keywords. With this you can jump up the rankings because there’s less competition and therefore less number of sites catering or the keywords in question.

The best way to overcome competition is to find a good niche… but if you want to make a little money you need to find a good AdSense niche which is a little more difficult.

Good AdSense keywords are ones that are niche, profitable and popular. It is then important that your chosen topic is not too niche or obscure that there isn’t enough context-specific, well paying ads available for your AdSense niche and the keywords that it contains. Researching good AdSense keywords and using them on your website ensures that you are given context related ads which helps boos the likelihood of your ads been clicked.

The need for AdSense Keywords

Why should you do keyword research? After all isn’t content king, shouldn’t you be focusing on creating, flowing entertaining prose for your visitors, instead of spending valuable time isolating AdSense keywords?

So who in fact are you writing for… the search engines or the visitor?

Writing for the web is slightly different from writing for magazines, books journals etc… because you are writing to two distinct audiences.

Yes, you write primarily for the visitors that happen to use your website, but you also have to write in order to satisfy the search engines… and AdSense. Luckily, both search engines and AdSense feed on the same types of keywords, so you don’t have to worry too much about trying to find different keywords for both.

So what’s the importance of AdSense Keywords?

You could, for example, write a fantastic, informative and mildly funny article on the idiosyncratic nature of the African Grey Parrot. It could be so good that anyone reading it would be entertained and… it might only mention the important terms ‘African grey parrot’ once, if at all.

But even though the material is good by human standards, search engines will simply not be able to see it, for what it is.

It will not be properly indexed by the search engines and therefore will not appear in any search engine queries related to African Grey Parrots. If it doesn’t appear in search queries how are people going to see it? How is the article going to be noticed?

Search engines index and categorize content primarily through what they ‘read’ from the content material from the webpage. They ‘crawl’ certain sections of a page looking for words that best describes the content it contains. These keywords are what a search engine recognizes, and you can get your website noticed quicker if you scatter the right kind of keywords through it.

Creating Content through Spinning

Writing enough content can be problem especially if you have a number of sites and an equal number of associated blogs. In pure desperation some publishers have resulted to using automated methods to create content for their sites.

Automated methods of creating content are possibly the poorest ways to create informative material for your websites. Their quality is often extremely poor and they are often seen as spam by the search engines.

Spinning is the common way of creating loads of content from one primary article. There are two types of spinning; single level spinning which is quite simple to do and nested spinning which is vastly more complicated.

Single level spinning can take the form of the following sentence;
The {most effective/best/productive} way to {write/compose} an article is to {try/endeavour/attempt} to create it yourself.

Spinning works by mixing the words enclosed within the {}. The bracketed words are seen as choices and what a spinning software does is selectively choose at random a choice enclose within the {} to create a fairly unique content material.

Nested spinning software not only chooses between words but also chooses between sentences creating even more unique content material.

These techniques work, if done properly, but they are risky. You could potentially create a hundred different articles from single piece of material written in spin format. But remember what you are doing. You are essentially spamming the search engines. You are not positively creating ‘new’ material for web users to use and ultimately you are working against Google. Also you can be penalized for distributing something that may be tagged as duplicated material.

Be careful of using spin content on your website. It can be very risky. I understand how desperate some publishers can become for material and the temptation for many can be too great to resist.

Whenever possible stay away from creating automated content.

Alternative ways of Creating Content

Creating quality content for a 50-100 page site isn’t easy by any means. Sometimes a publisher has to use alternative ways to create content.

There are a number of alternative ways to create content. One simple way is to get others to write it for you. This can be done by either creating your own article directories, where people willingly submit their articles to you in order to get some backlinks or you pay someone to write some content for you (for more ideas look at: AdSense Content).

Both methods have their advantages and disadvantages but if you are starting out I would advice that you write the content for your site yourself.

Only you know what type of content really works best for your site. Only you can find the best keywords to use and decide on the best ways to use them. It takes time, it can be work intensive and it can be extremely frustrating but only you can guarantee the originality and quality of material that you’ve put together yourself.

Writing your own content is one of the best ways to get AdSense content. Even if your writing isn’t of the greatest standard, you still need to practice and write. After all you’re in the information business and you need some kind of understanding and control of the business you’re in. You need to be involved in the production of the content in your website in one way or another.

Importance of a AdSense Niche with High Demand and Low Supply Levels

A website that is based on a topic that has high demand levels and low supply is going to attract significant amounts of traffic through search engines.

A well optimized AdSense website based around a well chosen niche theme will turn up on all relevant queries related to the topic in question. Competition will be low (because webmasters still haven’t got wind of it) and so you will have the opportunity to become an authority on the niche topic, enabling you to monopolize the traffic. Even if the topic isn’t particularly popular with AdSense advertisers you could still make some decent AdSense cash if your traffic levels are good.

A truly niche AdSense topic is one that has a decent amount of demand (a good number of search queries) and low supply (a low number of competing websites). Discovering an AdSense niche topic is one of the best ways for a new AdSense publisher to establish themselves into the AdSense scheme. It gives them the opportunity to control a significant amount of AdSense traffic without having to go through the trauma of having to compete for it.

About AdSense Niche Topics

The potential of a good AdSense niche is so attractive that some people will pay for a set of keywords that point to a lucrative theme. But what is it about a good AdSense niche that makes them so sought after?

A good AdSense niche theme is a topic that is very popular with visitors (i.e a theme that contains words that are often used in search queries) but it is also one that is not well known among webmaster (so the supply levels are low) and is a theme that has numerous high paying AdSense advertisers.
The words that make up a good AdSense niche normally have to be researched rigorously. And three main factors have to be determined to gain a measure of their potential, these are;

  • Demand levels (finding how much each word is used during search queries).
  • Supply levels (finding out how much is already present on the web relating to the word under investigation).
  • Advertiser popularity (researching how lucrative each word is).

The data behind all these factors can be found on the internet. But a publisher hoping to do the necessary keyword research to isolate an AdSense niche needs to know how to make sense of the figures they collect.
