What is AdSense… really?

Some people have been sceptical of the effect of AdSense on the internet. Overtime the scheme has helped create some of the most unscrupulous webmasters on the internet. Webmasters that have used unmentionable black hat techniques to con people into delivering AdSense clicks.

But these types of webmasters have always been around, looking for any opportunity to rip people off. All AdSense did was give them another way to try and make money; a way that they have taken to with unparalleled enthusiasm.

Of course there is a cost to all their activities. The creation of fake sites, revenue sites, poor portal sites… the list goes on, damages the web which ultimately damages the core of Google’s empire… its Search Engine. The glut of fake, poor quality websites that have inundated the internet in recent years have, for many people, damaged their web surfing experience. In order to make sure that their Empire isn’t inadvertently destroyed by its own creation Google have had to clean up the indexing system for their Search Engine and while doing so have removed millions of websites that would have otherwise clogged up the system.

AdSense and Google’s Search Engine are now quite healthy. They have both evolved into very stable and robust aspects of Google’s empire. AdSense does have an effect on the web but its influence is now much more positive than it once was. It has now become the web’s premier Pay-Per-Click (PPC) scheme. Most webmasters use AdSense in one form or another in their sites to earn a little extra revenue.

But what is Google AdSense, now? And why has it become so popular?

AdSense is basically a program devised by Google that monetizes internet traffic. If you happen to control a significant amount of internet traffic, you can turn this traffic into cold hard cash through the use of AdSense.

AdSense itself is quite simple. After you join, all you have to do is add some ads into your website and wait for your passing traffic to click on them. It’s that simple.

This is one of the main reasons that AdSense is very popular among many webmasters. It is easy to understand, easy to join and easy to use.

But its underlying ease has fooled many new webmasters into believing that it is easy to make money from. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case. AdSense is very difficult to earn money from especially if you’re starting from scratch.

So why is it difficult to make AdSense money?

Essential Design Points

The point to remember most is consistency. Give your website a unified look, one that makes it look professional and one that gives it a familiar ‘feel’.

Don’t forget your visitor. They need to feel comfortable using your site. It has to instantly deliver in terms of content and functionality. Everything has to work as quickly as possible. If your website fails in this very basic respect, your visitors will leave… never to return.

More than anything, users are an impatient bunch. They want everything now. And many won’t wait until fancy large web-media downloads on your website even it if is essential to the content and they will not forgive a site filled with dead hyperlinks.

Over the years the quality of websites has increased markedly. The times are long gone when sites were primarily built to display simple information, with little to no regard for user experience, navigation or aesthetics. The competition for users is now so intense that most webmasters know they need to be able to compete in ALL areas of website design to win over potential visitors to their sites.

A site needs to be unique yet has to feel familiar. It has to load quickly yet contain a number of eye catching multimedia elements to attract new potential visitors. Building a modern website is a delicate balancing act between two polar extremes. The skill in building a decent website is in knowing how to attain this somtimes difficult balance.

Simple AdSense Design Points

What do you need to know when designing your website? What design rules if any, do you need to understand in case you decide to break them?

Making your website different is all well and good but you can’t go creating the Versace of websites only to break all known web conventions and create a pretty but impractical site. Distinction and uniqueness is important but your website most importantly must still conform to expected web standards.

Here’s just a few tips to help you through any design issues you may have related to your website.

  • Try and keep your design simple, yet robust. Creating a complex website is all well and good, but it isn’t doing its job if it only works on Mozilla firefox and it’s a complete mess on all the other browsers. Multi-browser compliance is essential
  • Try and create a unified look to your website. Use the same general layout colors and fonts, throughout your site
  • When choosing colors, try and use complementary pairs that can provide harmonious contrast. Using a few similar colors is safe but can boring
  • Don’t use too many fonts. Ideally you want use only two types of fonts throughout your site
  • When using images try and keep them at a constant size. Also try and put them at similar locations on the pages of your site. To work with images easily and quickly an image editing program such as Photoshop elements is ideal for the job
  • Also consider screen resolution. Work to a size of 1024×768 pixels which is currently the most widely used screen size.

What are good traffic levels?

There is no proper answer for this question. Decent levels of traffic depend firstly, on your expectations. How much money are you planning on making? Do you want $500 pm (per month) or $3000? Secondly, your chosen AdSense niche could limit the number of people that visit your site. For example, it may be that only seven hundred people search for information related to African grey parrots per month on search engines. In the event of this, seven hundred becomes your upper limit in relation to getting Search Engine traffic.

Thirdly, the behaviour of people at your sites, have a major impact on what could be considered decent levels of traffic. If you have extremely good click-through-rates (CTRs) let’s say 10% and you have reasonably low financial expectations (about 330 pm) and you have a AdSense website that contains average priced ads ($0.50) then you would be satisfied with traffic levels in the region of 200-350 or so impressions a day.

But if people are less inclined to click on your ads and you had a CTR of only 2% then you would need 1000 or so daily impressions to make the same amount of money per month. So, as you can see a number of different factors determines the levels of traffic required to make a website on AdSense success; the primary factor been your expectations…

How do you Generate AdSense Traffic?

There are many ways to get your website noticed. Most of them involve creating backlinks to your website (links from other sites leading to your own).

Here’s a number of ways to drive traffic to your site:

  • Join a few forums (easy to do but difficult to keep up… takes time)
  • Write a blog (easy to set up, but again difficult to maintain requires constant attention but blogs are loved by search engines)
  • Write material for article directories (you need to write quiet a lot of articles for certain kinds of sites but a good way to get backlinks)

The above list are just a few suggestions, for more ideas visit the site at AdSense Traffic. Most ways of promoting your website are easy to do but nearly all of them take time to accomplish. It is extremely difficult to keep up with every single method daily, especially if you own a significant number of websites.

Also the results of all your hard work may not be so obvious. Your Search Engine rankings may remain stagnant for months, then oscillates for while before stabilizing on an even lower position for the keywords describing your site. Your work may all seem to be done for nothing.

But if you did all the necessary research, if you built a decent niche AdSense website filled with good quality content, you will eventually be rewarded with a good flow of organic (Search Engine derived traffic). You just have to keep plugging away, dedicating a number of hours every day towards promoting your site.

The need for a good AdSense Marketing Campaign

As stated, creating a successful AdSense website involves mastering three essential general disciplines, these are;

  • Planning and research (website and content)
  • Design and building (a website)
  • Marketing and promotion (getting your website noticed)

All these general disciplines are essential for any webmaster that wants AdSense success. To dedicate less time to any one of these areas (in order to streamline for example), will ultimately result in less AdSense revenue.

Marketing and promoting your website is probably the least technically demanding of the three disciplines but it is probably the hardest to do. This is primarily because it is the one discipline that requires the most diligence. And unfortunately this attribute is rare among a significant number of new AdSense publishers who are looking for quick and easy ways to make money.

A good marketing campaign involves planning and executing the means of getting your website noticed. It is the final piece of the puzzle, the piece that directs visitors to your site. Without a marketing campaign, there can be no AdSense cash. Traffic flowing through your site is what fuels AdSense. Only visitors passing through your site can click on your ads, you cannot use any other means to get the clicks on your ads that can make you money.

It is possible to generate AdSense cash even though you have an extremely poor site as long as you have a good marketing campaign and a significant number of people passing through your site.

AdSense traffic generates the potential for a click.

What on your Website needs to be optimized for Google AdSense?

Nearly all the elements that can be optimized on a website will have some impact on your AdSense earnings. Search engine optimization of the content will help with your search engine rankings, which can result in higher traffic levels and ultimately more potential clicks on your ads.

Ad format and placement is one of the least respected aspect of AdSense optimization. Getting the perfect blend between obscurity and prominence is one of the most difficult disciplines to learn. Choosing the right colors, ad type and location is crucial to the whole process of optimizing your website for AdSense success.

By making slight, small changes to your ads, you could boost your Click-Through-Rates (CTR) by a significant percentage. Even a one percent increase in CTR can seriously boost your earnings, especially if your AdSense topic attracts high paying ads.

Fatal AdSense Mistake
Many AdSense beginners make the fatal assumption in believing that after building a website and placing the ads, all they have to do is sit back and watch the AdSense come rolling in.

AdSense doesn’t work that way.

A decent site, with reasonable traffic, may be getting poor CTR’s simply because they failed to optimize their site with content specific keywords. A potentially good site may even get low CTRs because of something as simple as poor ad placement.
By tweaking, a webmaster can find the best format for their site. Of course it’s risky and an AdSense publisher may lose little revenue in the process but by methodically experimenting and documenting the changes anyone can eventually become a successful AdSense publisher.
