What you Need to Make Money with Google AdSense

What do you need to make money with Google AdSense? How do you start up a successful AdSense website? How much does it cost?

The basics needed to start making money with Google AdSense is:

  • A Domain name
  • A Web host
  • A Website
  • And an AdSense account

With these basic components you can start earning with Google AdSense.

Putting together a successful AdSense website (or blog) doesn’t have to cost anything. There are stories of webmasters that have created good quality blogs using platforms such as Google’s Blogger which is free to join and use. But these stories are few and far between. It is extremely difficult to make a success out of something that is given out for free. This is because free material often lacks the polished, professional feel and look that you can get from something that is paid for. More times than not free hosting services forces the user to include unwanted ads on their websites or blogs. Also there’s the more serious prospect that the service may be terminated, revoked or closed down at any moment without warning. Relying solely on free services to put together a serious AdSense project is very risky.

To put together a good website (or blog) you need a good solid domain name (one that contains well researched keywords and you need some web space from a reputable webhost. This will cost you money. But compared to a lot of small businesses the amount is often extremely small.

The Harder way to Make Money with Google AdSense

Many new AdSense publishers walk confidently into Google AdSense thinking that they ‘know’ how it works. They wrongly believe that it is a ‘get rich quick scheme’ made for the sole purpose of making quick AdSense cash.

They couldn’t be more further from the truth. You can make a lot of money with Google AdSense, but you can’t do so quickly for a sustained period of time legitimately.

If you start AdSense with that attitude, you will be making the whole AdSense process very difficult for yourself. If you think that making AdSense cash will be easy then you need to erase that thought from your mind.

One of the worse ways to start an AdSense project is to have the wrong expectations of what you think it can it do. If you think that it’s going to make you money quickly… and it doesn’t it can seriously dishearten you and possibly destroy any believe you had in the scheme.

The only way to combat this, is to have a realistic understanding of what AdSense is about and what it can do. And the only way to do this is to try and learn everything you can about Google AdSense. Read articles, websites, PDF’s… even buy books (which can be a great reliable resource for information about the net).

By knowing what AdSense is truly about you can be better prepared for everything that it throws at you. If after you’ve gathered the necessary information you decide that AdSense isn’t for you, then at least you haven’t wasted too much of your time in planning, researching and building a site.

The Hard way to Make Money with Google AdSense

It’s strange how so many new AdSense publishers seem to be looking for the easiest but seem to find hardest way to make AdSense cash. They may not be deliberately looking for the hardest possible way to make money with Google AdSense, but many always seem to find it.

The biggest mistake they commonly make is to assume that they know it all already. They believe all the hogwash touted on the web about how easy AdSense is and they step into the scheme with the same attitude.

AdSense may be easy to understand, easy to join and easy to use but it is very difficult to make a lot of money with the scheme and it is especially difficult if you happen to think that you know it all already.

I have been using AdSense for 4 years now and I’m still learning new things about the scheme. I make good money from the scheme but I can’t assume that I’ll always be making money with Google AdSense. One thing that I have learnt over time is that nothing is predictable about Google AdSense. If after four years I still can’t make assumptions about AdSense then how could a beginner?

The hardest possible way to make with Google AdSense is to think that you have a great AdSense theme. How can you possible know that your AdSense theme is great? How do you know that it’s going to make you money? Have you done any market research? Have you canvassed your prospective visitors?

If you then gamble on your ‘GREAT’ theme by buying a domain name and some web space for your site then you are not only making things harder for yourself but you will also be losing yourself some money. Domain names have to be carefully chosen, they should never be bought on a whim even if it feels inspired.

Before committing yourself to an AdSense project make sure that you’re prepared. Research, plan then… execute.

Ways of Making Money with Google AdSense

There are many strategies that can be used to make money with Google AdSense. The strategy you decide to use can vary depending on various personal and economic factors.

For example, there are ‘quick’ strategies for the more impatient AdSense publisher. These strategies if applied properly can get you on the earning ladder relatively quickly. Unfortunately, these methods tend not to last. Even worse there is the possibility that you might get banned by Google if you happen to practice the more extreme methods of earning AdSense cash too vigorously.

For those new publishers that are a bit more patient there are number of commonly used strategies that can be used to make money with Google AdSense. Most of these strategies involve creating information sites to attract visitors and then applying AdSense ads on them to generate some revenue.

There are two basic strategies that can be used with information sites. There is the:

  • Shallow site approach: Which involves focusing on one small site that gets heavily trafficked pages.
  • Broad site approach: Which involves creating a very large site that get less traffic pages but gets very good combined traffic results.

The shallow site approach can only work if you completely dominate a popular niche. By focusing on an AdSense niche theme you can potentially control all the traffic associated with that topic; which can be a lot.

The broad site approach doesn’t rely so much in you having to corner a niche but works by getting high traffic levels from share volume of pages connected with the site.

In general many webmasters use a combination of both strategies to generate some AdSense income. The strategy you decide to use is up to you. It depends on how much time, patience and money you have. Creating a good shallow AdSense website requires a lot of preparation and patience. You need to isolate a good niche theme (which is no easy task) and you will probably to use some quality software to create a very attractive website.

The broad site approach doesn’t need as much preparation, but creating the required amount of pages to make the strategy work can be very time consuming.
The path you decide to take is up to you…

What is AdSense… really?

Some people have been sceptical of the effect of AdSense on the internet. Overtime the scheme has helped create some of the most unscrupulous webmasters on the internet. Webmasters that have used unmentionable black hat techniques to con people into delivering AdSense clicks.

But these types of webmasters have always been around, looking for any opportunity to rip people off. All AdSense did was give them another way to try and make money; a way that they have taken to with unparalleled enthusiasm.

Of course there is a cost to all their activities. The creation of fake sites, revenue sites, poor portal sites… the list goes on, damages the web which ultimately damages the core of Google’s empire… its Search Engine. The glut of fake, poor quality websites that have inundated the internet in recent years have, for many people, damaged their web surfing experience. In order to make sure that their Empire isn’t inadvertently destroyed by its own creation Google have had to clean up the indexing system for their Search Engine and while doing so have removed millions of websites that would have otherwise clogged up the system.

AdSense and Google’s Search Engine are now quite healthy. They have both evolved into very stable and robust aspects of Google’s empire. AdSense does have an effect on the web but its influence is now much more positive than it once was. It has now become the web’s premier Pay-Per-Click (PPC) scheme. Most webmasters use AdSense in one form or another in their sites to earn a little extra revenue.

But what is Google AdSense, now? And why has it become so popular?

AdSense is basically a program devised by Google that monetizes internet traffic. If you happen to control a significant amount of internet traffic, you can turn this traffic into cold hard cash through the use of AdSense.

AdSense itself is quite simple. After you join, all you have to do is add some ads into your website and wait for your passing traffic to click on them. It’s that simple.

This is one of the main reasons that AdSense is very popular among many webmasters. It is easy to understand, easy to join and easy to use.

But its underlying ease has fooled many new webmasters into believing that it is easy to make money from. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case. AdSense is very difficult to earn money from especially if you’re starting from scratch.

So why is it difficult to make AdSense money?

Essential Design Points

The point to remember most is consistency. Give your website a unified look, one that makes it look professional and one that gives it a familiar ‘feel’.

Don’t forget your visitor. They need to feel comfortable using your site. It has to instantly deliver in terms of content and functionality. Everything has to work as quickly as possible. If your website fails in this very basic respect, your visitors will leave… never to return.

More than anything, users are an impatient bunch. They want everything now. And many won’t wait until fancy large web-media downloads on your website even it if is essential to the content and they will not forgive a site filled with dead hyperlinks.

Over the years the quality of websites has increased markedly. The times are long gone when sites were primarily built to display simple information, with little to no regard for user experience, navigation or aesthetics. The competition for users is now so intense that most webmasters know they need to be able to compete in ALL areas of website design to win over potential visitors to their sites.

A site needs to be unique yet has to feel familiar. It has to load quickly yet contain a number of eye catching multimedia elements to attract new potential visitors. Building a modern website is a delicate balancing act between two polar extremes. The skill in building a decent website is in knowing how to attain this somtimes difficult balance.

Simple AdSense Design Points

What do you need to know when designing your website? What design rules if any, do you need to understand in case you decide to break them?

Making your website different is all well and good but you can’t go creating the Versace of websites only to break all known web conventions and create a pretty but impractical site. Distinction and uniqueness is important but your website most importantly must still conform to expected web standards.

Here’s just a few tips to help you through any design issues you may have related to your website.

  • Try and keep your design simple, yet robust. Creating a complex website is all well and good, but it isn’t doing its job if it only works on Mozilla firefox and it’s a complete mess on all the other browsers. Multi-browser compliance is essential
  • Try and create a unified look to your website. Use the same general layout colors and fonts, throughout your site
  • When choosing colors, try and use complementary pairs that can provide harmonious contrast. Using a few similar colors is safe but can boring
  • Don’t use too many fonts. Ideally you want use only two types of fonts throughout your site
  • When using images try and keep them at a constant size. Also try and put them at similar locations on the pages of your site. To work with images easily and quickly an image editing program such as Photoshop elements is ideal for the job
  • Also consider screen resolution. Work to a size of 1024×768 pixels which is currently the most widely used screen size.

What are good traffic levels?

There is no proper answer for this question. Decent levels of traffic depend firstly, on your expectations. How much money are you planning on making? Do you want $500 pm (per month) or $3000? Secondly, your chosen AdSense niche could limit the number of people that visit your site. For example, it may be that only seven hundred people search for information related to African grey parrots per month on search engines. In the event of this, seven hundred becomes your upper limit in relation to getting Search Engine traffic.

Thirdly, the behaviour of people at your sites, have a major impact on what could be considered decent levels of traffic. If you have extremely good click-through-rates (CTRs) let’s say 10% and you have reasonably low financial expectations (about 330 pm) and you have a AdSense website that contains average priced ads ($0.50) then you would be satisfied with traffic levels in the region of 200-350 or so impressions a day.

But if people are less inclined to click on your ads and you had a CTR of only 2% then you would need 1000 or so daily impressions to make the same amount of money per month. So, as you can see a number of different factors determines the levels of traffic required to make a website on AdSense success; the primary factor been your expectations…

How do you Generate AdSense Traffic?

There are many ways to get your website noticed. Most of them involve creating backlinks to your website (links from other sites leading to your own).

Here’s a number of ways to drive traffic to your site:

  • Join a few forums (easy to do but difficult to keep up… takes time)
  • Write a blog (easy to set up, but again difficult to maintain requires constant attention but blogs are loved by search engines)
  • Write material for article directories (you need to write quiet a lot of articles for certain kinds of sites but a good way to get backlinks)

The above list are just a few suggestions, for more ideas visit the site at AdSense Traffic. Most ways of promoting your website are easy to do but nearly all of them take time to accomplish. It is extremely difficult to keep up with every single method daily, especially if you own a significant number of websites.

Also the results of all your hard work may not be so obvious. Your Search Engine rankings may remain stagnant for months, then oscillates for while before stabilizing on an even lower position for the keywords describing your site. Your work may all seem to be done for nothing.

But if you did all the necessary research, if you built a decent niche AdSense website filled with good quality content, you will eventually be rewarded with a good flow of organic (Search Engine derived traffic). You just have to keep plugging away, dedicating a number of hours every day towards promoting your site.
